The President
Rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. Luke 10:20
You are on my list! How many times have we heard that and wondered just what list we made? And then we wonder if making the list is a good thing or a bad thing.
At the last Council meeting, the members reached into John Weber's hat (thankfully it was just washed that day) and took out a slip of paper. On each slip was a list of 4 or 5 family names of the members of our church. Each of us was asked to look at the list of names and keep those members in mind if we do not see them in church for a couple of weeks. The Lord guided my hand to a slip with names of members that, thankfully, are regular attendees for the most part. But I think all of us got at least one name that belongs to rare or non-attending members. I will be talking with all of the families on my list and hope the others will also do so.
But the church is made up of sinners and, regretfully, I am in that group. For many years, it has been easy to lament about the missing members but nobody, including me, has ever followed up on them. It is now part of the Council's tasks to follow up on those on their list who may have been missing for a couple of weeks. This follow up is not to strong arm the missing to get to church. It is an effort to make the missing members know someone cares if they miss church. It is an effort to ensure all the members feel the love of Christ through our calls and, if necessary, visits.
But, as important as our list of members to follow up on may be, the most important list to be on is the one in Luke 10:20. And all of us have a responsibility to follow up on missing members because God wrote our name on his list and only we, through rejection of God can remove that name. It is easy to walk away and fall into temptation and it is our duty as servants of the Lord to help our lost brothers and sisters find their way back to church.
I will follow up and pray for the members on my list. And I will pray for the dedication to see that my members are called if I don't see them. Just don't hang up when you see my name on the caller ID. I am only calling .because I care for you and I want you to be on the list of names written in heaven.
